Caribbean

Area

One of the most popular sailing destinations at wintertime. The region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands are also called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies.

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east and the Lucayan Archipelago.

Perfect beaches, crystal clear waters – time doesn’t exist here.

Weather

Even in winter the region enjoys sunshine. Warm trade winds blow consistently from the east. Year is divided into 'dry' and 'wet' seasons, dry winter and early spring are most preferable for sailing cruises.

Sailing tips

Coral reefs – watch your depth sounder and follow the pilot books

Marinas are very busy at wintertime, so it’s preferable to book in advance.

Some of the islands have less fresh water – be prepared, that it can be quite expensive
